MCP vs Skills
A plain comparison of the two ways to extend an AI agent, when each one fits, and why ScholarMuse is an MCP server.
Many agents can be extended in two ways: by connecting an MCP server or by installing a skill. They solve different problems, and they work well together.
What a skill is
A skill is a set of written instructions, sometimes with small scripts or templates, that your agent loads when a task calls for it. It teaches the agent how to do something: your lab's way of formatting a methods section, a checklist for reviewing a manuscript, the steps for cleaning a certain kind of data file.
A skill lives with your agent, usually as a folder on your computer or in your agent's settings. It does not give the agent anything new to reach. If the agent could not get some data before, a skill alone does not change that.
What an MCP server is
An MCP server gives your agent tools it can call, usually running somewhere else. It lets the agent reach things it cannot reach on its own: a database, a service, a model that draws figures. The agent sends a request and gets an answer back.
When each one fits
| You want your agent to… | Use |
|---|---|
| Follow your own steps, style or checklist | A skill |
| Reuse a prompt or routine you keep repeating | A skill |
| Look things up in live databases | An MCP server |
| Check facts against an outside source | An MCP server |
| Use a service that needs an account, credits or a sign-in | An MCP server |
They combine well. A skill can say "for every manuscript, check the references and flag any retractions", and an MCP server such as ScholarMuse supplies the tools that actually do the checking.
Why ScholarMuse is an MCP server
What ScholarMuse adds is access, not instructions: more than 50 research sources, reference checks and figure drawing, all running on our servers. That is what MCP is for. It also means:
- one connection works in Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and many other agents;
- you sign in once in your browser, with no API key to store;
- new tools and sources appear without you installing anything.
ScholarMuse does not ship a skill. You can write your own skill that uses ScholarMuse's tools, if your agent supports skills.
