Connecting your agent

Setup steps for each agent. The quickest way is one line that lets your agent do the setup itself.

You connect ScholarMuse once per agent. There is no API key: you sign in at scholarmuse.ai in your browser and click Allow. After that the agent can use every ScholarMuse tool.

The quick way: paste one line

If your agent can run commands or edit files (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, Trae, CodeBuddy, Qwen Code and similar), send it this line as a normal message:

Read https://scholarmuse.ai/install/agent.md and follow the instructions to connect ScholarMuse. Open the browser authorization when needed, then show me three things you can now do for my research.

The agent reads the setup page, adds the server, starts the browser sign-in and checks that the tools work. When the browser opens, sign in and click Allow. Some agents need a restart before they show ScholarMuse as connected.

If your agent lives in a browser or a desktop app and cannot change its own settings, add ScholarMuse yourself, using the steps for your agent below. The server address is always:

https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp

The Connect page has the same steps, plus one-click install links for Cursor, VS Code, Trae and Cherry Studio.

Claude

Claude.ai and the Claude desktop app: open Settings → Connectors, choose Add custom connector and paste the server address. Then sign in when asked.

Claude Code: run this in a terminal, then type /mcp in Claude Code, select scholarmuse and choose Authenticate.

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user scholarmuse https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp

ChatGPT

In ChatGPT on the web, open the Plugins page, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server. Name it ScholarMuse, paste the server address as the server URL and choose OAuth for authentication. Confirm the risk warning and create it, then sign in at scholarmuse.ai. In a new chat, type @ and select ScholarMuse.

Whether you can add a custom MCP server depends on your ChatGPT plan, and in a team workspace on your admin's settings.

Codex

codex mcp add scholarmuse --url https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp
codex mcp login scholarmuse

The second command opens the browser sign-in.

Gemini CLI

gemini mcp add --transport http --scope user scholarmuse https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp

Then run /mcp auth scholarmuse inside Gemini CLI.

Cursor

Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (create the file if it does not exist; if it lists other servers, add only the scholarmuse entry):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "scholarmuse": {
      "url": "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Find scholarmuse in Cursor's MCP settings, make sure it is on, and start the sign-in from its entry.

VS Code (Copilot agent mode)

code --add-mcp '{"name":"scholarmuse","type":"http","url":"https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp"}'

Other agents

Antigravity

Where: The file ~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json (in the IDE: “…” in the agent panel → MCP Servers → Manage MCP Servers → View raw config)

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "scholarmuse": {
      "serverUrl": "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Click Authenticate for the server under Settings → Customizations.

Windsurf

Where: Cascade → MCP menu → Open MCP config file

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "scholarmuse": {
      "serverUrl": "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Refresh the server list and sign in when asked.

OpenCode

Where: The file opencode.json

{
  "mcp": {
    "scholarmuse": {
      "type": "remote",
      "url": "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp",
      "enabled": true
    }
  }
}

Run opencode mcp auth scholarmuse.

OpenClaw

Where: Run these in a terminal

openclaw mcp set scholarmuse '{"url":"https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp","transport":"streamable-http","auth":"oauth"}'
openclaw mcp login scholarmuse

Open the authorization link it prints.

WorkBuddy

Where: Connectors → Custom connector → Configure MCP, or the file ~/.workbuddy/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "scholarmuse": {
      "type": "streamableHttp",
      "url": "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

WorkBuddy does not load a newly added server until you approve it in the app. Approve it, then complete the browser authorization.

Trae

Where: Settings → MCP → Add → Add Manually (choose the local environment)

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "scholarmuse": {
      "url": "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Confirm, then complete the authorization Trae starts in your browser. There is also a one-click install link.

Qoder

Where: Extensions → Connectors → Add Connector → Add custom MCP, or the file ~/.qoder/settings.json (Qoder CLI)

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "scholarmuse": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

In Qoder CLI, type /mcp, select scholarmuse and authenticate.

CodeBuddy

Where: CodeBuddy Code: run this in a terminal. CodeBuddy IDE: Settings → MCP → Add MCP, with the same address and type "http".

codebuddy mcp add --scope user --transport http scholarmuse https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp

Start CodeBuddy, type /mcp and authorize scholarmuse.

Kimi Code

Where: Type /mcp-config in Kimi Code, or edit ~/.kimi-code/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "scholarmuse": {
      "url": "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Run /mcp-config login scholarmuse.

Qwen Code

Where: Run this in a terminal

qwen mcp add --transport http --scope user scholarmuse https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp

Start qwen, type /mcp and authenticate scholarmuse.

Cherry Studio

Where: Settings → MCP → MCP Servers → Add: type Streamable HTTP, leave headers empty

https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp

Save and switch the server on. Your browser opens for sign-in. There is also a one-click install link.

When you edit a configuration file, keep the entries that are already there.

Apps that cannot open the sign-in

Some apps can add an MCP server but cannot run the browser sign-in themselves, for example Tongyi Lingma plugins, Baidu Comate, MiniMax Code, or Doubao desktop when no authorization page opens. Add ScholarMuse there as a local server through mcp-remote, a small helper that opens the browser sign-in for the app. It needs Node.js 18 or later.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "scholarmuse": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "mcp-remote",
        "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Any other MCP app

Look for a setting called "custom connector", "MCP server" or "add server" and paste the server address. If the app has a command line, this also works:

npx -y add-mcp https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp

Check that it works

Ask your agent: "List the ScholarMuse capabilities and show me three things you can now do for my research." If the tools do not show up, see Troubleshooting.
