Getting started
Connect your AI agent to ScholarMuse in about a minute and run your first request.
ScholarMuse gives the AI agent you already use a set of academic tools: paper search, reference checks, grants, datasets, statistics, discipline databases and scientific figures. You connect it once. After that you simply ask your agent in plain language.
It works with agents that support MCP, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI. You do not need an API key to connect an agent.
1. Paste one line into your agent
Copy this line and send it to your agent as a normal message:
Read https://scholarmuse.ai/install/agent.md and follow the instructions to connect ScholarMuse. Open the browser authorization when needed, then show me three things you can now do for my research.Your agent reads the setup page and adds ScholarMuse for you.
If your agent cannot run setup steps itself (for example Claude or ChatGPT in the browser, or a desktop app such as WorkBuddy or Cherry Studio), add a custom connector or MCP server in its settings with this address. The connect page lists where to find that setting in each app.
https://scholarmuse.ai/mcpThe Connect page has step-by-step instructions for each agent.
2. Approve in your browser
A browser window opens at scholarmuse.ai.
- Sign in, or create an account.
- Choose which discipline packs this agent may use.
- Click Allow.
Go back to your agent. Some agents need a restart before they show ScholarMuse as connected.
ScholarMuse never asks you to paste a password, token or API key into your agent. If an agent asks for one during setup, do not give it.
3. Try a first request
Ask in your own words. A few examples:
- "Find 20 papers on microplastics in agricultural soil since 2020, open access first."
- "Check every reference in my draft and flag anything that doesn't exist or has wrong details."
- "Find R01 grants on CAR-T resistance funded since 2022, with PI, institution and amount."
- "Get monthly US CPI and unemployment since 2000 and line them up by date."
If you are not sure what is available, ask: "What can you do with ScholarMuse?" Your agent can list every capability, and you can browse them on the Capabilities page.
Where to look afterwards
| Page | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Capability packs | Which discipline packs are switched on |
| Activity | The calls your agents made, with sources and credits used |
| Files | Figures your agents created |
| Connected agents | The agents you approved, and a button to disconnect each one |
Next steps
- Discipline packs: what each pack contains.
- What your agent gets back: how to read and cite results.
- Credits: when a call is charged.
