Research tools for Codex

Run codex mcp add once and sign in. Codex can then fetch datasets, official statistics and discipline records for the research code it writes.

How to connect ScholarMuse to Codex

Two commands in a terminal. You can also paste “Read https://scholarmuse.ai/install/agent.md and follow the instructions to connect ScholarMuse” into Codex and let it run them.

Full connect guide →
  1. Step 1

    Add the server

This registers ScholarMuse as an MCP server in Codex.

codex mcp add scholarmuse --url https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp
  2. Step 2

This starts the browser sign-in for the server you just added.

    codex mcp login scholarmuse
  3. Step 3

    Approve in your browser

A scholarmuse.ai window opens. Sign in, approve access and choose which discipline packs Codex may use. There is no API key to create or paste.

  4. Step 4

    Check that it works

Ask Codex to list the ScholarMuse capabilities. If the server does not show as connected, restart Codex and ask again.

What Codex can fetch once connected

Codex writes and runs code, so this list favours capabilities that return data to analyse: datasets, time series and discipline records.

Find datasets
Locate a dataset with its licence and DOI before writing the loader.
Economic & social statistics
Official series as clean date and value pairs, in place of numbers typed in by hand.
Historical weather data for any place
Daily weather for any coordinates since 1981, as a tidy series for a model or a plot.
Air quality data for any place
Measured daily PM2.5, NO2 and other pollutants from the stations nearest to a point, for exposure or trend scripts.
Search papers
Find the paper behind a method you are implementing, with its DOI for the README.
Gene & protein lookup
Identifiers and annotations to join against your own tables in a bioinformatics script.
Protein structures
Structure files from RCSB PDB and AlphaFold DB for a structural analysis.
Compounds & materials
Compound and crystal properties as inputs for a screening or modelling script.
Earthquake & water data
USGS earthquake catalogues and stream-gauge readings for geoscience notebooks.

Things to ask Codex

Economic & social statistics

You say to your agent

Use ScholarMuse to get monthly US unemployment and CPI since 2000, save them as CSV in data/, and write a script that plots both.

Two series with unit and source that Codex writes to disk and plots.

Historical weather data for any place

You say to your agent

Fetch daily maximum temperature for 35.01 N, 135.77 E from 1990 to 2024 and fit a linear trend in a notebook.

A daily series with units from NASA POWER, ready for the analysis code.

Find datasets

You say to your agent

Find an openly licensed dataset of labelled bird songs, tell me its licence and size, and write the download and loading code.

Candidate datasets with repository, size, format, licence and DOI.

Frequently asked questions

No. codex mcp login opens your browser, you sign in at scholarmuse.ai and approve access. There is no API key to store.

Analysis code needs real inputs. With ScholarMuse connected, Codex can fetch a series, a dataset record or a structure file from the official source and write it into your project with its source and licence, rather than inventing sample values.

Tools are grouped into discipline packs, and Codex only sees the packs you allowed when you authorized it. Switch the pack on in your ScholarMuse account and ask Codex to list the capabilities again.

Every call your agent makes uses credits, and a call is charged only when it succeeds. There are no subscriptions. A new account starts with a one-time gift of 50 credits. The 6 web tools under /tools are free without an account, up to 5 runs a day.

Requests are used only to answer you. We do not train models on them.
