How the NIH RePORTER search works
- 1
Type a topic
Write the topic in a few words, such as “CAR-T resistance in leukemia”. There are no field codes or form fields to fill in.
- 2
NIH RePORTER is searched
The query goes to the NIH RePORTER API, which matches it against project titles, project terms and abstracts. Each project is shown once, for its most recent fiscal year among the matches.
- 3
Read the projects
You get up to 6 projects, each with its title, investigators, institution, fiscal year, that year’s award and the NIH institute code. The title links to the full record on reporter.nih.gov.

What is searched, and how your words are matched
The search covers three text fields of each NIH project: the title, the project terms and the abstract. The words in your query are combined with AND, so every word has to appear somewhere in those fields.
That makes short queries work better than long ones. If a search returns nothing, remove a word or swap a narrow term for a broader one before you conclude that NIH funds nothing on the topic.
How to read the amounts and years
The amount on each card is the award for the fiscal year shown, not the total over the life of the project. A five-year R01 appears with one year’s funding. For the full funding history, open the project on reporter.nih.gov from the title link.
The sample above shows the range: from a $38,741 fellowship year to a $706,866 research project year, all administered by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
When to use this page and when to use reporter.nih.gov
This page is for a quick look at who NIH is funding on a topic. It returns 6 projects and has no filters.
Use the official site at reporter.nih.gov when you need the full result list, its filters or its exports. ScholarMuse is not affiliated with NIH; it reads the public NIH RePORTER API, and the records are US Government works in the public domain.
