Academic MCP for WorkBuddy
Add ScholarMuse to WorkBuddy as a custom connector and sign in once in your browser. WorkBuddy can then check reference lists, look up journals and funded projects, and draw figures from real sources.
How to connect ScholarMuse to WorkBuddy
ScholarMuse is added as a custom connector. It is not listed in the WorkBuddy connector marketplace, so there is nothing to search for there. These steps follow the WorkBuddy documentation.
Step 1
Open the MCP configuration
In WorkBuddy go to Connectors → Custom connector → Configure MCP. The same configuration is also reached from Plugins → MCP servers → Configure MCP, and it is stored in the file ~/.workbuddy/mcp.json.
Step 2
Add the ScholarMuse entry
Paste this configuration and save. If the file already has other servers under mcpServers, keep them and add only the scholarmuse entry.
{ "mcpServers": { "scholarmuse": { "type": "streamableHttp", "url": "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp" } } }Step 3
Approve the new server
WorkBuddy does not load a server that was just added to the configuration until you approve it in the app. Approve ScholarMuse and switch it on.
Step 4
Approve in your browser
A scholarmuse.ai window opens. Sign in, approve access and choose which discipline packs WorkBuddy may use. There is no API key to create or paste.
Step 5
If no authorization window opens
Replace the scholarmuse entry with this one. It runs a small local program, mcp-remote, which opens the browser sign-in itself. Your computer needs Node.js 18 or later.
{ "mcpServers": { "scholarmuse": { "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "mcp-remote", "https://scholarmuse.ai/mcp" ] } } }Step 6
Check that it works
Ask WorkBuddy to list the ScholarMuse capabilities and name three things it can now do for your research. If the tools do not appear, restart WorkBuddy and ask again.
What WorkBuddy can do once connected
WorkBuddy sits on the desktop next to your documents, so the list starts with the checks a manuscript or an application needs before it leaves your computer, followed by figures and background numbers.

- Verify references
- Hand WorkBuddy the reference list of a draft and get back which entries exist, which are wrong and what the correct details are.
- Retraction checker
- Run the DOIs of a manuscript through a retraction check before it goes to co-authors or a journal.
- Search papers
- When a report or a review section needs sources, WorkBuddy searches seven indexes and gives you records with DOIs.
- Journal checker
- An invitation to submit arrives by email. Ask whether the journal is listed in DOAJ and what it charges.
- Find funded grants
- See which projects NIH, NSF and UKRI have funded on your topic, with amounts and abstracts, while you plan an application.
- Scientific figure maker
- Describe a technical route or a study design in words and get a labelled figure for the application or the slides.
- Graphical abstract maker
- For submissions where the journal asks for a graphical abstract along with the manuscript.
- Economic & social statistics
- Official economic and social series for the background section, each with its source, so the numbers can be cited.
