Open-access journalsDOAJ API v4 journal search

DOAJ

DOAJ, the Directory of Open Access Journals, is an independent nonprofit index of open-access journals that have passed its review, with metadata under CC0. Through ScholarMuse an agent can look up a journal by name or ISSN and learn whether it is in DOAJ, what it charges authors, which licences it uses and how it runs peer review.

ScholarMuse tools: journal_info. Each successful call uses credits.

The web tool runs without an account, up to 5 runs a day per visitor.

Ask your agent

Is the journal eLife listed in DOAJ, and since when?
What article processing charge does PLOS ONE report to DOAJ, and what licence does it publish under?
I got an invitation from a journal with ISSN 1932-6203. Is it in DOAJ and what kind of peer review does it use?

What your agent gets back

Every record carries id, source, title, url, license, attribution and retrievedAt. The fields below are the data that comes from DOAJ.

Date the DOAJ record was created
doajUrl
Link to the journal's DOAJ page
hasApc
Whether the journal charges an APC

What it covers

  • Journal records in DOAJ, looked up by print or electronic ISSN, or by title.
  • Fees, licences and review process are the values the journal itself reported to DOAJ.
  • The DOAJ answer is merged with the journal's OpenAlex profile into one record.

Limits

  • One journal per call. DOAJ's article index is not searched, only its journal records.
  • If no ISSN is known, DOAJ is searched by title and only an exact title match is accepted.
  • Not being in DOAJ does not by itself mean a journal is untrustworthy. Subscription and hybrid journals are not eligible for DOAJ.
  • Subjects, languages, waiver policy and other charges are not returned.

How ScholarMuse reaches DOAJ

The connector calls doaj.org/api/v4/search/journals directly, querying by ISSN or by exact title. No API key is sent. The tool looks the journal up in OpenAlex first to collect its ISSNs, then tries up to three of them in DOAJ.

Responses are cached for up to 7 days, so a journal added to or removed from DOAJ this week can take that long to show.

API key: the upstream API can be called without one, so you do not add one.

Licence and attribution

Licence: CC0-1.0

Journal metadata from the Directory of Open Access Journals (doaj.org), CC0.

Records that come from DOAJ carry this licence and attribution. When you cite the data in a paper, follow DOAJ's own citation guidance.

FAQ

ScholarMuse is not an official DOAJ product. It is one MCP server for academic data, and its journal_info tool queries DOAJ. An agent connected to ScholarMuse can use DOAJ without a separate server.

No. The DOAJ API can be called without a key, and ScholarMuse does not ask you for one. You sign in to ScholarMuse once and your agent calls the tool.
