UKRI Gateway to Research

Gateway to Research (GtR) is the public database of projects funded by UK Research and Innovation, run by UKRI. Through ScholarMuse, an agent searches GtR projects by topic and gets each project's grant reference, lead organisation and department, lead funder, grant category, status, dates, total funded value and abstract. Investigator, organisation and year narrowing is applied by ScholarMuse to the top matches.

ScholarMuse tools: search_grants. Each successful call uses credits.

Ask your agent

Which UKRI projects on offshore wind turbine fatigue have been funded, and which funder leads each one?
Find UKRI-funded projects on antimicrobial resistance led by the University of Edinburgh, with total funded value in pounds.
What UKRI projects on quantum sensing started in 2022 or later, and what is the status of each?

What it covers

  • Projects in UKRI's Gateway to Research, searched by topic through the GtR API.
  • amount is the total funded value of the project, not a yearly figure.
  • Each record links to its project page on gtr.ukri.org.

Limits

  • One call returns at most 25 projects (default 10). Without a funder choice, that number is shared between NIH, NSF and UKRI, so ask for UKRI only to fill it with UKRI projects.
  • GtR project search has no investigator, organisation or date filter. ScholarMuse applies the year filter to the 100 most relevant matches, and the investigator and organisation filters to at most 40 of them, so a narrow filter can miss projects.
  • The year filter uses the funding start year. Organisation matching is on the lead organisation only, and at most two people are read per project.
  • Project outcomes, publications and partner organisations are not returned. An upstream search request is abandoned after 30 seconds.

How ScholarMuse reaches UKRI Gateway to Research

The connector calls the Gateway to Research API at gtr.ukri.org/gtr/api/projects with no API key, then follows each project's links to its fund, lead organisation and people records.

Search responses are cached for up to 12 hours and the linked fund, organisation and people records for up to 30 days, so changes to those can take that long to appear.

API key: the upstream API can be called without one, so you do not add one.
