Eurostat

Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union. It publishes harmonised statistics for EU members and other European countries as multi-dimensional datasets. Through ScholarMuse, an agent can search the Eurostat table of contents with find_series, then use get_series to pull one series from a dataset by its code, such as une_rt_m, for one country or for the EU as a whole.

ScholarMuse tools: find_series, get_series. Each successful call uses credits.

Ask your agent

Get the monthly unemployment rate for Spain from Eurostat since 2019.
Find the Eurostat dataset for the house price index and fetch the quarterly series for the Netherlands.
What is the population of Poland on 1 January for each year since 2010?

What your agent gets back

Every record carries id, source, title, url, license, attribution and retrievedAt. The fields below are the data that comes from Eurostat.

find_series

Each candidate is a whole dataset. Eurostat is skipped when the query names a country outside Europe.

seriesId
e.g. eurostat:une_rt_m?geo=ES
title
Dataset title from the table of contents
frequency
Guessed from the dataset's latest period
geography
Country named in the query, if any
coverageStart
First period in the dataset
coverageEnd
Latest period in the dataset
note
Reminder that the dataset has several dimensions

get_series

otherOptions is present only when a dimension was left open and had more than one code.

seriesId
Dataset code with every dimension spelled out
title
Dataset label plus the chosen breakdowns
units
Label of the unit dimension
frequency
Label of the freq dimension
geography
Label of the geo dimension
dimensions
Code and label used for each dimension
otherOptions
Up to 25 alternative codes per open dimension
lastUpdated
When Eurostat last updated the dataset
start
First period returned
end
Last period returned
count
Number of observations returned
observations
List of period and value pairs

What it covers

  • Entries of type dataset or table in the Eurostat table of contents, fetched by dataset code such as une_rt_m, nama_10_gdp or demo_pjan.
  • Country matching in find_series covers the 27 EU members and 15 other European countries, including Norway, Switzerland, the UK and Turkey, plus the EU27 and euro area totals.
  • Frequency follows the dataset: annual, semi-annual, quarterly, monthly, weekly or daily periods are all read.

Limits

  • Search matches English dataset titles only. It cannot search for a single indicator inside a dataset.
  • Open dimensions are filled with totals or the first available code, and geography defaults to the EU27 when present. Read dimensions and otherOptions to confirm what you got.
  • A filter value that the dataset does not contain is rejected with a list of valid codes. Eurostat writes Greece as EL and the United Kingdom as UK; the connector converts ISO codes for you.
  • One series per call, and each of the two data requests may take up to 45 seconds.

How ScholarMuse reaches Eurostat

The connector calls the Eurostat dissemination API directly and sends no key. find_series searches the English table of contents downloaded from the catalogue endpoint; get_series calls the Statistics API (JSON-stat) twice, once for the latest period to learn the dimensions and once for the full history of the chosen series.

Data responses are cached for up to 6 hours and the table of contents for 1 day.

API key: the upstream API can be called without one, so you do not add one.

Licence and attribution

Records that come from Eurostat carry this licence and attribution. When you cite the data in a paper, follow Eurostat's own citation guidance.

FAQ

ScholarMuse is not an official Eurostat product. It is one MCP server for academic data, and its find_series, get_series tools query Eurostat. An agent connected to ScholarMuse can use Eurostat without a separate server.

No. The Eurostat API can be called without a key, and ScholarMuse does not ask you for one. You sign in to ScholarMuse once and your agent calls the tool.

Yes. Each successful call to find_series, get_series uses credits, and a call that fails is not charged. Current price: Economic & social statistics, 1 credit / call.
