OECD

The OECD publishes its statistics for member and partner countries through the OECD Data Explorer. Each dataset is a cube with several dimensions, such as country, measure, unit and frequency. Through ScholarMuse, an agent can search dataset names with find_series, then use get_series to pull one series out of a dataset, with totals chosen for any dimension left open.

ScholarMuse tools: find_series, get_series. Each successful call uses credits.

Ask your agent

Find the OECD dataset for monthly unemployment rates and get the series for Korea.
Which OECD datasets cover health expenditure, and what dimensions does the first one have?
Get quarterly GDP for Mexico from the OECD and tell me which unit and adjustment were used.

What your agent gets back

Every record carries id, source, title, url, license, attribution and retrievedAt. The fields below are the data that comes from OECD.

find_series

Each candidate is a whole dataset, not a single series, so frequency and units are not known at this step.

seriesId
oecd:<agency>,<dataflow> plus optional ?REF_AREA=ISO3
title
Dataset name
geography
Country named in the query, if any
note
Reminder that the dataset has several dimensions

get_series

otherOptions is present only when a dimension was left open and had more than one code.

seriesId
Dataset id with every dimension spelled out
title
Dataset name plus the measure
units
Unit of measure and multiplier
frequency
Frequency label of the chosen series
geography
Reference area label
dimensions
Code and label used for each dimension
otherOptions
Up to 25 alternative codes per open dimension
start
First period returned
end
Last period returned
count
Number of observations returned
observations
List of period and value pairs

What it covers

  • Datasets published by OECD agencies in the OECD Data Explorer, covering OECD members and partner countries.
  • A series id names the agency and dataflow, for example oecd:OECD.SDD.TPS,DSD_LFS@DF_IALFS_UNE_M?REF_AREA=USA, and any dimension can be fixed with ?DIMENSION=CODE.
  • Frequency depends on the dataset. When it is left open, monthly is preferred, then quarterly, then annual.

Limits

  • Search matches dataset names only. It cannot search inside a dataset for a measure or indicator.
  • Open dimensions are filled with totals or the first available code, so always read dimensions and otherOptions to confirm what you got.
  • It can be slow: requests are spaced 1.5 seconds apart and each data request may take up to 45 seconds, with two per call.
  • One series per call. A country in the query is pre-filled only for single countries; OECD group totals need their own REF_AREA code.

How ScholarMuse reaches OECD

The connector calls the public OECD SDMX REST API at sdmx.oecd.org directly and sends no key. It lists all OECD dataflows to search their names, then makes two data requests per get_series call: one for the latest observation of every matching series to choose one, and one for that series' full history.

Data responses are cached for up to 12 hours and the dataset list for 7 days.

API key: the upstream API can be called without one, so you do not add one.

FAQ

ScholarMuse is not an official OECD product. It is one MCP server for academic data, and its find_series, get_series tools query OECD. An agent connected to ScholarMuse can use OECD without a separate server.

No. The OECD API can be called without a key, and ScholarMuse does not ask you for one. You sign in to ScholarMuse once and your agent calls the tool.

Yes. Each successful call to find_series, get_series uses credits, and a call that fails is not charged. Current price: Economic & social statistics, 1 credit / call.
