PreprintsarXiv API (export.arxiv.org)

arXiv

arXiv is the open preprint server for physics, mathematics, computer science and related fields, operated by Cornell University. Through ScholarMuse an agent can search arXiv by keyword with an optional year range, and resolve an arXiv id or arXiv URL to its metadata, abstract and PDF link.

ScholarMuse tools: search_papers, get_paper. Each successful call uses credits.

Ask your agent

Find arXiv preprints on diffusion models for protein structure generation from 2023 onwards.
Look up arxiv:1706.03762 and give me the authors, abstract and PDF link.
Which arXiv category is the paper hep-th/9711200 in, and was it published in a journal?

What your agent gets back

Every record carries id, source, title, url, license, attribution and retrievedAt. The fields below are the data that comes from arXiv.

search_papers

Searched by default, in arXiv's relevance order.

arxivId
arXiv id without the version suffix
doi
Journal DOI if reported, otherwise the arXiv DOI
authors
Author names, first 12
year
Year of first submission
date
Date of first submission
venue
Journal reference if reported, otherwise arXiv
category
Primary arXiv category, such as cs.CL
openAccessUrl
Link to the PDF on arxiv.org
abstract
Abstract text, cut at 2,000 characters

get_paper

For an arXiv id, OpenAlex is asked first under the arXiv DOI. The arXiv API answers when OpenAlex has no record under that DOI.

What it covers

  • Preprints in all arXiv subject areas. Every record is typed as a preprint and is open access.
  • Both new-style ids such as 2301.01234 and old-style ids such as hep-th/9901001 are accepted, with or without a version.
  • A year range filters on the submission date.

Limits

  • Search uses up to 8 content words from the query and every one must match, so a long question can return nothing.
  • At most 25 results per search_papers call, shared across all sources searched.
  • arXiv records carry no citation count and no retraction flag. The PDF link is returned, not the full text.
  • Because of the 3-second spacing, arXiv is slower than the other sources when several requests queue up.

How ScholarMuse reaches arXiv

The connector calls the arXiv API at export.arxiv.org/api/query and reads the Atom feed it returns. No API key is sent. Requests are spaced at least 3 seconds apart, as arXiv's API terms ask.

Searches are cached for up to 6 hours and lookups by arXiv id for up to 1 day, so a new version posted today may not show until tomorrow.

API key: the upstream API can be called without one, so you do not add one.

Licence and attribution

Licence: arXiv metadata: CC0 1.0 (each paper carries its own licence)

Thank you to arXiv for use of its open access interoperability.

Records that come from arXiv carry this licence and attribution. When you cite the data in a paper, follow arXiv's own citation guidance.

FAQ

ScholarMuse is not an official arXiv product. It is one MCP server for academic data, and its search_papers, get_paper tools query arXiv. An agent connected to ScholarMuse can use arXiv without a separate server.

No. The arXiv API can be called without a key, and ScholarMuse does not ask you for one. You sign in to ScholarMuse once and your agent calls the tool.

Yes. Each successful call to search_papers, get_paper uses credits, and a call that fails is not charged. Current price: Search papers, 1 credit / call.
