INSPIRE-HEP

INSPIRE-HEP is the literature database of the high-energy physics community, run by a collaboration of laboratories that includes CERN, DESY, Fermilab and SLAC. Through ScholarMuse an agent can search its literature records by keyword when it names inspire-hep as a source, and get citation counts, collaboration names and arXiv ids for each paper.

ScholarMuse tools: search_papers. Each successful call uses credits.

Ask your agent

Search INSPIRE for the ATLAS and CMS Higgs boson observation papers from 2012 and give their citation counts.
Find recent INSPIRE papers on the muon g-2 anomaly and tell me which collaboration wrote each.
Use INSPIRE to find papers on sterile neutrino searches since 2020 that have an arXiv version.

What your agent gets back

Every record carries id, source, title, url, license, attribution and retrievedAt. The fields below are the data that comes from INSPIRE-HEP.

search_papers

Only when the agent passes inspire-hep in sources. It is not part of the default search.

What it covers

  • High-energy physics literature records in INSPIRE: journal papers, preprints, conference papers and other document types.
  • Results come in INSPIRE's default best-match order and can be limited by year range.
  • Large collaborations are represented by the collaboration name and the total author count.

Limits

  • At most 25 results per call, and only the first 12 authors of each paper are listed.
  • Parentheses, colons and quotation marks are removed from the query, so INSPIRE's field syntax cannot be used.
  • INSPIRE has no open-access flag. A paper counts as open access when it has an arXiv eprint, and the link points to arXiv.
  • get_paper does not query INSPIRE. Author, institution and conference records are not exposed.

How ScholarMuse reaches INSPIRE-HEP

The connector calls inspirehep.net/api/literature directly with the query and a fixed list of fields. No API key is sent.

Search results are cached for up to 6 hours, so citation counts can be a few hours old.

API key: the upstream API can be called without one, so you do not add one.

Licence and attribution

Licence: CC0-1.0

Data from INSPIRE-HEP (inspirehep.net), CC0.

Records that come from INSPIRE-HEP carry this licence and attribution. When you cite the data in a paper, follow INSPIRE-HEP's own citation guidance.

FAQ

ScholarMuse is not an official INSPIRE-HEP product. It is one MCP server for academic data, and its search_papers tool queries INSPIRE-HEP. An agent connected to ScholarMuse can use INSPIRE-HEP without a separate server.

No. The INSPIRE-HEP API can be called without a key, and ScholarMuse does not ask you for one. You sign in to ScholarMuse once and your agent calls the tool.

Yes. Each successful call to search_papers uses credits, and a call that fails is not charged. Current price: Search papers, 1 credit / call.
