ERIC

ERIC is the education research database of the Institute of Education Sciences at the US Department of Education. It indexes journal articles, reports and other documents on education. Through ScholarMuse an agent can search ERIC by keyword when it names eric as a source, limit results to a year range or to records with full text hosted by ERIC, and see which are peer reviewed.

ScholarMuse tools: search_papers. Each successful call uses credits.

What it covers

  • Education research indexed by ERIC, both journal articles (EJ ids) and other documents such as reports (ED ids).
  • Each result links to its ERIC record page and carries the ERIC id.
  • Results can be limited by year range and to records whose full text ERIC hosts.

Limits

  • At most 25 results per call. There is no filter input for peer review; it is returned as a field.
  • Quotation marks, colons and brackets are removed from the query, so ERIC's field and phrase syntax cannot be used.
  • Only the year is returned, not a full date. There is no citation count, and many records have no DOI.
  • get_paper does not look up ERIC ids. ERIC descriptors and education levels are not returned.

How ScholarMuse reaches ERIC

The connector calls the ERIC API at api.ies.ed.gov/eric directly, with the search text and a fixed list of fields. No API key is sent.

Search results are cached for up to 6 hours.

API key: the upstream API can be called without one, so you do not add one.

Licence and attribution

Licence: ERIC bibliographic records: US government work, public domain (full texts keep their own copyright)

Data from ERIC, Institute of Education Sciences, US Department of Education (eric.ed.gov).

Records that come from ERIC carry this licence and attribution. When you cite the data in a paper, follow ERIC's own citation guidance.

FAQ

ScholarMuse is not an official ERIC product. It is one MCP server for academic data, and its search_papers tool queries ERIC. An agent connected to ScholarMuse can use ERIC without a separate server.

No. The ERIC API can be called without a key, and ScholarMuse does not ask you for one. You sign in to ScholarMuse once and your agent calls the tool.
