Dataset DOIsDataCite REST API /dois

DataCite

DataCite is a non-profit DOI registration agency whose members, mostly data repositories and research institutions, register DOIs for datasets and other research outputs. Through ScholarMuse, an agent searches the DataCite REST API for DOIs whose resource type is Dataset and gets the DOI, creators, year, publishing repository, description and stated licence.

ScholarMuse tools: search_datasets. Each successful call uses credits.

The web tool runs without an account, up to 5 runs a day per visitor.

Ask your agent

Find datasets with a DataCite DOI on Arctic sea ice thickness and give me the DOI, repository and licence of each.
Which repositories hold datasets on permafrost soil carbon? List creators and publication year.
Is there a citable dataset of Raman spectra of microplastics? I need the DOI and the file formats.

What your agent gets back

Every record carries id, source, title, url, license, attribution and retrievedAt. The fields below are the data that comes from DataCite.

search_datasets

When a repository searched in the same call returns the same DOI, its record is kept and DataCite is listed in that record's alsoIn, with DataCite filling any empty fields.

doi
Dataset DOI, lower case
creators
Creator names, up to 10
year
Publication year
repository
Publisher named in the DOI metadata
description
Abstract or first description, tags removed
size
Sizes as stated by the depositor
format
Formats as stated by the depositor
version
Version string, when given
license
Licence of the dataset, from its rights list
licenseUrl
URL of that licence
alsoIn
Other sources that returned the same dataset

What it covers

  • DOIs registered with DataCite whose resource type is Dataset, from any repository that registers there.
  • Software, text and other resource types are left out by the connector.
  • Each record links to https://doi.org/ plus the DOI, which resolves to the hosting repository.

Limits

  • One call returns at most 25 datasets (default 10). When several repositories are searched together, that number is shared between them, so name DataCite alone to fill it.
  • The only search input is a keyword query. There are no year, licence, author or file-type filters; the agent has to read those fields in the results.
  • Size, format and licence appear only when the depositor filled them in, and only the first rights entry is read. File lists and download links are not returned.
  • An upstream request is abandoned after 30 seconds.

How ScholarMuse reaches DataCite

The connector calls api.datacite.org/dois with no API key, restricted to the Dataset resource type and sorted by relevance.

Responses are cached for up to 6 hours, so a dataset published at DataCite in the last few hours may not appear yet.

API key: the upstream API can be called without one, so you do not add one.

Licence and attribution

Licence: CC0-1.0

Metadata from DataCite (datacite.org), CC0.

Records that come from DataCite carry this licence and attribution. When you cite the data in a paper, follow DataCite's own citation guidance.

FAQ

ScholarMuse is not an official DataCite product. It is one MCP server for academic data, and its search_datasets tool queries DataCite. An agent connected to ScholarMuse can use DataCite without a separate server.

No. The DataCite API can be called without a key, and ScholarMuse does not ask you for one. You sign in to ScholarMuse once and your agent calls the tool.
