Zenodo

Zenodo is an open research repository operated by CERN, where researchers in any field deposit datasets, software and papers and receive a DOI. Through ScholarMuse, an agent searches Zenodo records of type dataset and gets the DOI, creators, publication date, total file size, file count, formats, access right and licence of each match.

ScholarMuse tools: search_datasets. Each successful call uses credits.

The web tool runs without an account, up to 5 runs a day per visitor.

Ask your agent

Find Zenodo datasets on urban tree canopy and tell me the total size, file formats and licence of each.
Is there a dataset of bat echolocation call recordings on Zenodo? Give me the DOI and whether access is open.
Which Zenodo datasets cover wastewater SARS-CoV-2 surveillance? List creators, publication date and version.

What your agent gets back

Every record carries id, source, title, url, license, attribution and retrievedAt. The fields below are the data that comes from Zenodo.

search_datasets

sizeBytes, fileCount and format are worked out from the record's file list, so they are missing when Zenodo returns no files for a record.

doi
Dataset DOI, lower case
creators
Creator names, up to 10
year
Publication year
date
Publication date as given by Zenodo
description
Record description, tags removed
sizeBytes
Total size of all files in bytes
fileCount
Number of files in the record
format
File extensions found, up to 8
version
Version string, when given
access
Zenodo access right, such as open
license
Licence id of the dataset itself
alsoIn
Other sources that returned the same dataset

What it covers

  • Zenodo records whose type is dataset, in any discipline.
  • Software, publications and other Zenodo record types are left out by the connector.
  • Each record links to its Zenodo page, where the files can be downloaded.

Limits

  • One call returns at most 25 datasets (default 10). When several repositories are searched together, that number is shared between them, so name Zenodo alone to fill it.
  • The only search input is a keyword query. There are no year, licence, author or file-type filters; the agent has to read those fields in the results.
  • Only metadata is returned: no file names, download links or file contents. An upstream request is abandoned after 30 seconds.

How ScholarMuse reaches Zenodo

The connector calls zenodo.org/api/records anonymously, with no access token, restricted to type dataset and sorted by best match. Requests are spaced just over one second apart.

Responses are cached for up to 6 hours, so a dataset published at Zenodo in the last few hours may not appear yet.

API key: the upstream API can be called without one, so you do not add one.

Licence and attribution

Licence: CC0-1.0

Metadata from Zenodo (zenodo.org), CC0. Each dataset carries its own licence.

Records that come from Zenodo carry this licence and attribution. When you cite the data in a paper, follow Zenodo's own citation guidance.

FAQ

ScholarMuse is not an official Zenodo product. It is one MCP server for academic data, and its search_datasets tool queries Zenodo. An agent connected to ScholarMuse can use Zenodo without a separate server.

No. The Zenodo API can be called without a key, and ScholarMuse does not ask you for one. You sign in to ScholarMuse once and your agent calls the tool.

Yes. Each successful call to search_datasets uses credits, and a call that fails is not charged. Current price: Find datasets, 1 credit / call.
