ClinicalTrials.gov

ClinicalTrials.gov is the registry of clinical studies maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Through ScholarMuse, an agent can search registered studies by condition, intervention, phase, recruitment status and country, and get back each study's NCT id, status, sponsor, enrollment, dates and primary outcomes with a link to the registry record. It is a research lookup, not medical advice.

ScholarMuse tools: search_clinical_trials. Each successful call uses credits.

Ask your agent

Which phase 3 trials of semaglutide for heart failure are recruiting in Germany?
How many completed phase 2 trials are registered for glioblastoma, and who sponsors the first ten?
Find NCT04280705 and tell me its enrollment and primary outcome.

What it covers

  • Studies registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, in any country and any overall status.
  • Filters for condition, intervention, phase 1 to 4, nine overall statuses and a country with a study site.
  • Free-text query for anything else, such as a sponsor, an outcome or an NCT id.
  • The summary reports the total number of matching studies, not only the ones returned.

Limits

  • At most 25 studies per call (default 10), first page only. There is no way to page through a longer result list.
  • Posted results are not returned. hasResults only says whether the registry record has them.
  • No eligibility criteria, arm details, site addresses or contacts. Primary outcome text is cut at 240 characters.
  • At least one of condition, intervention, query or country is required. Country names must be in English.

How ScholarMuse reaches ClinicalTrials.gov

The connector calls the ClinicalTrials.gov API v2 /studies endpoint with query.cond, query.intr, query.term and query.locn parameters plus status and phase filters. No API key is sent.

Responses are cached for up to 3 hours, so a status change at ClinicalTrials.gov can take that long to appear.

API key: the upstream API can be called without one, so you do not add one.

FAQ

ScholarMuse is not an official ClinicalTrials.gov product. It is one MCP server for academic data, and its search_clinical_trials tool queries ClinicalTrials.gov. An agent connected to ScholarMuse can use ClinicalTrials.gov without a separate server.

No. The ClinicalTrials.gov API can be called without a key, and ScholarMuse does not ask you for one. You sign in to ScholarMuse once and your agent calls the tool.
